what's xDai?

xDai is the native token of the Gnosis Chain, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. It serves primarily as the gas token for transactions on the network, enabling low-cost, fast payments with EVM compatibility as an Ethereum sidechain. Originally launched as the xDai Chain in 2018, it rebranded to Gnosis Chain in late 2021 alongside a token merger involving STAKE and GNO. The chain supports DeFi applications, payments, and bridges, secured by validators using proof-of-stake mechanisms.
