what's tao?
TAO is the native token of Bittensor, an AI-focused blockchain project that enables decentralized artificial intelligence services. The project features a unique mining mechanism where participants earn TAO by contributing AI services such as models, predictions, and data processing, rather than traditional proof-of-work mining. TAO implements a Bitcoin-like halving mechanism every ~10.5 million blocks with a maximum supply of 21 million tokens. The network operates through a subnet system where rewards are distributed based on root weight, and the project supports staking mechanisms. Bittensor launched in March 2023 with an initial distribution of 7,200 TAO per day. The platform includes derivative tokens (dTAO) and features like Substrike, a permissionless mining engine that converts social media activity into on-chain yields.
