what's lightning network?

The Lightning Network is a layer-2 payment protocol built on the Bitcoin blockchain designed to enable fast, low-cost transactions by conducting them off-chain through payment channels between users. It addresses Bitcoin's scalability issues by allowing millions of transactions per second without burdening the main blockchain, while still leveraging Bitcoin's security via smart contracts. Users open bidirectional payment channels, route payments through a network of nodes, and settle final balances on-chain only when channels close. Key features include instant settlement, minimal fees, and privacy enhancements compared to on-chain transactions. Developed initially by Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja, it was launched by Lightning Labs in 2018 and continues to evolve for broader adoption in decentralized payments.
