what's dojo?
Dojo is an open-source framework designed for building fully onchain games and interactive experiences on the Starknet blockchain. It provides developers with tools to create persistent, autonomous worlds where game logic, assets, and player interactions are executed directly onchain, ensuring transparency, immutability, and true ownership for players. By leveraging Cairo, Starknet's native programming language, Dojo enables efficient execution of complex game mechanics like real-time strategy (RTS) elements, automation, and multiplayer battles without relying on offchain servers. The framework supports rapid prototyping and scaling through features like entity-component-system (ECS) architecture, which optimizes data handling and state management on Layer 2. Recent updates, such as version 1.7, introduce enhanced performance, native application support, and integration with testing tools like snforge (Starknet Foundry), making it easier for creators to build and iterate. Dojo powers projects like Blitz, an onchain 4X RTS game, and hosts community events like game jams to foster innovation in decentralized gaming. Dojo emphasizes a shared universe where individual games interconnect, allowing cross-project interactions and economies. This modular approach empowers developers to craft self-sustaining ecosystems, from competitive multiplayer arenas to exploratory worlds, all while maintaining low latency and cost efficiency inherent to Starknet's design.
