what's Rollkit?
Rollkit is a modular, open-source framework designed for deploying sovereign rollups, enabling developers to build customizable layer-2 solutions independent of specific data availability (DA) or settlement layers. It supports various execution environments such as EVM, CosmWasm, and Cosmos SDK, while leveraging DA from providers like Celestia, Bitcoin, or Ethereum. Originally developed within the Celestia ecosystem, Rollkit was spun out as a neutral, community-led public good to foster innovation across the modular blockchain stack. Key features include sovereign consensus where rollup nodes determine state validity without inheriting security from the base layer, facilitating Bitcoin rollups via data availability on Bitcoin blocks. This allows for expanded use cases like healthy fee markets on Bitcoin, with easy integration for custom rollups. Developers can run local nodes using Docker and Go, making it accessible for experimentation and production deployment of rollups tailored to specific needs.
