what's Nightfall?

Nightfall is an open-source privacy protocol designed to enable confidential transactions on public blockchains using zero-knowledge proofs. Originally developed by EY (Ernst & Young), it allows for private transfers of various assets, including ERC-20 tokens and NFTs, while maintaining regulatory compliance and scalability. By bundling transactions into ZK-rollups, Nightfall reduces costs and enhances efficiency, making it suitable for enterprise use cases like cross-border payments and supply chain management. As a Layer 3 solution, Nightfall integrates with Ethereum-compatible networks such as Celo, Polygon, and Plume, leveraging their infrastructure for secure, decentralized privacy. It addresses key blockchain limitations by shielding transaction details from public view without compromising the integrity or auditability of the underlying chain, positioning it as a bridge between public blockchains and privacy-sensitive applications.
