what's Funding the Commons?

Funding the Commons is an initiative dedicated to accelerating the development and implementation of blockchain-based infrastructure for funding public goods. It bridges builders, researchers, funders, and diverse ecosystems including Web2, Web3, academia, public sector, philanthropy, and industry to create sustainable models for value alignment and resource allocation in decentralized systems. Through events, residencies, and collaborative programs like co-living spaces in locations such as Argentina, it fosters innovation in mechanisms that support open-source and communal projects on networks like Ethereum. The project emphasizes practical applications, such as RealFi for real-world financial tools grounded in blockchain principles of trust and accessibility. It supports experimentation with funding protocols that enable everyday use of crypto infrastructure, from remittances to community-driven development, without relying on traditional venture models. By hosting hackathons and discussions, Funding the Commons cultivates a global network aimed at solving coordination challenges in public goods provision.
