what's Ethereum Swarm?
Swarm is an open-source decentralized peer-to-peer network providing serverless cloud storage and communication infrastructure for Web3 applications. As a key component of the Ethereum ecosystem, it enables permissionless data publishing, fault-tolerant redundancy through local replication, privacy via cryptographic chunk encryption and single-owner access, and DDoS resistance that scales with network size. The Bee client connects users to the global P2P network for seamless data storage and retrieval without centralized dependencies. Data is split into fixed-size chunks, addressed via XOR-based Kademlia DHT for proximity-aware distribution across node neighborhoods, ensuring efficient retrieval and retention. Economic sustainability is achieved through BZZ token incentives enforced by Ethereum smart contracts: node operators earn for storage and bandwidth provision, while postage stamps prepay for data uploads, with settlement via proof-of-custody and relay rewards. This creates a self-sustaining data commons resistant to censorship and node failures.
