what's Digital Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility?

Digital Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility is a conceptual NFT artwork series created by artist Mitchell F. Chan, first minted on Ethereum in August 2017 at Toronto's InterAccess Media Arts Centre. Inspired by Yves Klein's 1950s Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility—where certificates were sold for immaterial "zones" of International Klein Blue (IKB) in exchange for gold ritually thrown into the Seine—Chan's project reimagines this on blockchain. Each Digital Zone is a unique, indivisible token (ERC-20 compliant with 0 decimals, symbol IKB) purchased directly via ETH through the smart contract `IKB.sol`. Tokens are released in limited series (e.g., Series 0: 31 at 0.1 ETH; subsequent series of 10 with doubling prices up to 12.8 ETH in Series 7), ensuring exponential scarcity. The contract records provenance, enabling a "ritual" function where owners burn their token, sending half the purchase ETH to a designated mining pool ("theRiver") to symbolically release immaterial value. Wrapper ERC-721 NFTs ("IKB Cachet de Garantie") later provide visual receipts generated from on-chain data. With no inherent imagery beyond these receipts, the project probes art's value, blockchain's role in certification, and immateriality, establishing it as one of the earliest high-art NFTs with full on-chain mechanics for transfer and destruction.[[1]](https://github.com/mitchellfchan/IKB)[[2]](https://chan.gallery/ikb)
