Clementine (Citrea)00

what's Clementine (Citrea)?

Clementine is a trust-minimized two-way peg program developed by Citrea, a Bitcoin rollup project. It enables secure bridging between Bitcoin's main chain and Citrea's layer-2 network using BitVM2, a programming paradigm that allows complex computations on Bitcoin without altering its consensus rules. The program facilitates the movement of BTC into and out of the rollup while minimizing trust assumptions, relying on cryptographic proofs rather than centralized custodians. At its core, Clementine incorporates light client proofs for both Bitcoin and Citrea to verify state transitions, alongside a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) verifier to ensure the validity of rollup computations. This setup allows users to deposit BTC via a peg-in mechanism, where funds are locked on Bitcoin and minted as equivalent assets on Citrea for DeFi applications. Withdrawals (peg-out) are challenged and resolved on Bitcoin using BitVM fraud proofs if disputes arise, enhancing security and decentralization. The project addresses key bottlenecks in Bitcoin DeFi by enabling efficient, trust-minimized interactions, with implementations available on GitHub for further development and auditing.
